Let's Get to Know Our Favorite Island Wildlife: Snorkeling with Sea Turtles!

Writer's picture: STVG STVG

One thing visitors always ask us about and want to see are the sea turtles! The U.S Virgin Islands as well as surrounding Caribbean waters are well known for these migratory friends. Some days it seems we can't be on the water without seeing tons popping up their heads everywhere. Below, we will discuss the behavior, types and best locations to see and swim with our favorite marine life.

Meet the Residents: Green Sea Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles

The US Virgin Islands are home to two main species of sea turtles; although we've seen the occasional Leatherback, it is more common to see Green Sea Turtles and the striking Hawksbills. The Green Sea Turtle is the largest hardshell turtle in existence and they feed primarily on seagrasses and algae which gives their meat a greenish color; hence the name. They live to be about 70 years old on average and will nest 3-5 times per season every two years. Hawksbill Turtles are distinguished mainly because of their bird like beak and more oval eye shape. They also display beautiful tortoise shell pattern on their carapace and feed mainly on coral sponges. These turtles also differ from Green Sea Turtles as they are one of the smallest species out there and have very hard shells which makes them less likely to be fed upon. We love both of these species but I always consider it a treat when I see a Hawksbill because they are so beautiful.

Prime Time and Location for Spotting Sea Turtles

For the best chance of observing these magnificent creatures in their element, set your alarm for an early morning snorkeling session. Just like us, sea turtles are on the lookout for breakfast at this time, making it the opportune moment for a close encounter. The peaceful morning waters offer a serene backdrop to witness these oceanic wonders as they gracefully navigate through their underwater realm. Although, they can be found at any beach, the best ones in St. Thomas tend to be Brewer's Bay by the airport, Secret Harbour in East End, Magens Bay on Northside and lastly Honeymoon Beach on Water Island.
